Otavalo & Northern Andes
“Colours and lakes”
A morning departure from Quito driving out to the northern Andes. Our first stop will be in Cayambe to try the traditional biscuits and some of the dairy products made locally.
Driving through the beautiful Andean landscape, we will see mountains, volcanoes and farmland. We will take a stop to admire San Pablo Lake on the way to Otavalo market, visit the totora workplace in an indigenous community to learn how the local people use this andean plant to make different products from baskets to boats!
We will arrive in Otavalo market, the most colorful place in the Andes, there will be time to interact with the local people from town and purchase the finest textiles in Ecuador.
After the market we will walk by the eucalyptus forest and visit Peguche waterfall, which is considered a sacred place for the indigenous population.
We will enjoy a delicious lunch with a local family; we will share part of their culture and learn more about the natural materials like cochineal and ancestral techniques to make textiles and crafts.
In the afternoon we will depart to Quito.
