Amazon Wonders Tour

Day 1 – Quito – Papallacta – Napo
Leaving in the morning we depart from Quito to Papallacta, a small mountain village famous for its natural hot springs. Enjoy the springs for a soothing dip in the steaming thermal waters.
After lunch we continue into the Amazon region by crossing the majestic Andes highlands, overlooking lush green valleys and sparkling waterfalls. In the afternoon we arrive at Punta Ahuano, a tiny port town on the north bank of the Napo River, where canoes await to take you for the 15 minute ride downstream to the hotel.

Day 2 – Cultural encounters and wonderful wildlife
After breakfast, we board a dugout canoe and navigate 20 minutes down the scenic Napo River to Cosano. From here we will hike for around two hours through primary rainforest and have the opportunity to see real hunting traps which were traditionally used by the local natives. The guides will demonstrate how they work and explain which animals are caught in each one.
Following lunch, we continue on to the village of Ahuano, where you will learn about traditional Quichua culture. A local host will show you how to make chicha, a typical beverage (tasting optional!) and demonstrates the spiritual cleansing rituals that are still practiced today throughout the surrounding community.

Day 3 – Adventures on the river
Begin the day with an early breakfast. We will then spend the morning walking through primary and secondary forest trails where you will observe distinct species of birds and insects as well as a great variety of trees and medicinal plants. The guide will explain how these plants are used not only in medicine, but also in construction and other local activities. Along the trails, there are several opportunities to up the adventure factor, with hanging bridges and vines for swinging from tree to tree like Tarzan.
A chance to really get involved in the adventure by learning how to build and navigate a raft. On a small river island your guide will show you how to bind balsa logs together with rope to form a “vessel”. Be prepared to get a little wet!
Later, enjoy a one-hour walk around a flat river island and visit the mariposario (Butterfly House).

Day 4 – Napo – Quito
After breakfast, we depart for the trip over the mountains and back to the city. At about halfway, the bus stops at a lookout to stretch your legs and enjoy a packed lunch before continuing on to Quito.

Additional Information
On days 2 and 3, you will participate in several morning and afternoon activities. These programs will begin after an early breakfast and are led by both native and bilingual guides. Note: the activities on day 2 and day 3 may be inverted due to weather conditions and availability.
