THE GALÁPAGOS EXPLORER
Packing Guide
WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY GALÁPAGOS ADVENTURE?
Such a frequently asked question! Here I have compiled a list of items I would suggest taking. It is not definitive, as everyone likes to have their own comforts and essentials, but I hope this will help as a starting point on what to take and what not to take. On many of the cruise ships space can be limited, so less is more.
- Water shoes or sandals – good for wet landings and getting in and out of boats
- Walking shoes – for walking across the volcanic terrain and hiking the volcanoes
- Trousers quick dry
- Shirt/cover up – the sun can be very strong so it’s good to have something on hand that can be used to protect you
- Light weight t-shirts
- Hoody or fleece
- Waterproof jacket
- Swimwear
CLOTHING
Located on the equator the weather is generally warm, but due to the remoteness of the islands it can be changeable. Layers are the key! Handy to have items that can protect you from the sun, keep you dry or warm you up.
- Waterproof high SPF 50+
- Sunglasses – I suggest polarized which are better due to water reflection
- Hat – but don’t forget it can be windy!
- Scarf or bandana
- A shirt or similar to use as a cover up
- Rash Vest can be useful as protection when snorkeling
SUN PROTECTION
As previously mentioned the equatorial location means the sun can be very strong. Don’t let sunburn spoil your holiday.
- Refillable water bottle – help protect the beautiful islands by reducing plastic waste!
- Back pack and/or water proof bag
- Motion sickness pills
- Insect repellant
- Travel adapter
ESSENTIALS
A few essential items that will help with your trip.
- Waterproof bag / dry sack
- Wide angle lens / macro for close ups
- Circular polarizer glass filter
- Telephoto lens if you are a bird watcher
- Waterproof camera
- Extra batteries and memory cards
- Binoculars – essential for keen bird watchers!
PHOTOGRAPHY
To ensure you take the best photos and protect your equipment I suggest bringing the following:
- Snorkel
- Mask
- Fins – if you can fit them in your bag!
- Rash vest is great protection from the sun when snorkeling in the warmer months,
- Wet suit can also be useful when the weather is cooler.
DIVE / SNORKEL GEAR
All good cruise ships and day boats will provide you with snorkeling equipment but having your own mask and snorkel that fits well will ensure you enjoy your snorkeling experience to the full!
- Organic matter / food / seeds / animals
- Controlled substances – ensure you bring your Doctor’s prescription
- Smart clothes – the islands are very relaxed, better to bring practical clothes
- Heels – as above not practical for the sandy beaches and volcanic rocks!
WHAT NOT BRING
All luggage will be screened before boarding your flight to the Galápagos and on arrival to each island at the airports or ports, so bare this in mind when packing. Do not bring:
Don’t panic if you forget something! There are shops on the main islands, so it is easy to buy snacks, sun protection or visit the pharmacy, as well as pick up clothing and souvenirs, although the selection can be limited. However, once on a cruise ship it may be several days before you are near an inhabited island, so make sure you have sufficient sun protection with you, though they will have first aid kits on board. We also suggest having a couple of days on the mainland before flying to the Galápagos to ensure your luggage arrives from your international flight.
