An Introduction to Guayaquil

Guayaquil is the gateway to the Galápagos Islands

Guayaquil is the gateway to the Galápagos Islands and the largest city in Ecuador.   Located on the banks of Rio Guayas, it is the nation’s main port and commercial centre. Home to almost 3 million people, it is a vibrant, growing cosmopolitan city with lots to see and do. All flights to the Galàpagos islands go via the city of Guayaquil and so it is very common to spend a few days there before or after your trip to the islands.

One of my favourite things to do is take a stroll along the riverside Malécon, a fantastic example of urban renewal offering relaxed open spaces, gardens, playgrounds and restaurants. Grab a drink and watch the people walk by or the sunset across the river. From the La Perla, Guayaquil’s answer to the London Eye, you get a fantastic view across the city and the charming hillside neighbourhoods of Santa Ana and Las Peñas. If you’re feeling energetic you can also climb the 444 steps to the top of Santa Ana hill, through the colourful houses to visit the lighthouse and church, and take in another stunning cityscape.

A modern city, rich with history, local legend has it that the name Guayaquil comes from Guayas, the great Puna Indian Chief who fought against the Incas and the Spanish, and his wife Quill. It is said that Guayas killed his wife rather than let her be captured by the conquistadors and then drowned himself. As you drive through the city you can see the bronze sculpture of the couple standing above the traffic. The city is full of monuments, mosaics, parks and museums, so take some time to explore.

Highlights to visit:

  • Malécon 2000 waterfront
  • Las Penas & Cerro Santa Ana neighbourhoods
  • Museo Antropológico y de Arte Contemporáneo
  • Parque Histórico Guayaquil
  • Metropolitan Cathedral
  • Parque Seminario or “Iguana” Park

Guayaquil is also a great place to start from if you plan to explore the South of Ecuador.   From here you can visit the Churute Mangrove reserve or spend the day on a working Hacienda.   A short drive away you will find beautiful beaches and great surf on the west coast or head south to the Andes and colonial Cuenca.
